In case you missed it: the 2016 GNY Annual Reunion

IIT Bombay Alumni Association – Greater New York Chapter held its 2016 Annual Reunion on October 23rd at the Hyatt Jersey City, NJ. The theme ofthis year’s event was “Learning from Our Own – Leadership, Achievements, Success.” Over 100 GNY Chapter members and their guests came to hear and learn from our illustrious IIT Bombay alumni. Raj Gupta, ’67 talked about his experiences after graduating from IIT Bombay; going to Cornell to do his Masters through the IITB-Cornell connection, his career at Rohm & Haas where he served as Chairman/CEO and his experiences since then as a Board member of several large Fortune 100 companies like Delphi Automotive PLC, Vanguard Investments and others. In a fire-side chat, Bharat Desai ’75 Chairman IITB heritage Foundation and Chairman Syntel, Inc talked about his work as an entrepreneur in starting his own company and his work now in giving back to IIT Bombay and society in general.

The day’s program also included a session of IITB’s women alumni. Although women make up only 8% of IIT graduates, the few who have graduates have accomplished a lot. In a panel discussion, Bina Nabh Kanagat ’80 Director, Core Technology & Cloud Sales at Oracle Technologies; Radhika Venkatraman ’93 SVP/CIO at Verizon and Archana Sondhi ’02 Director, Bristol Myers Squibb talked about their experiences after graduating from IIT, the challenges in balancing work and family life, how they got to what they are doing today and lessons from their experiences for some of the younger alumni.

Prof Ravi Sinha, Dean, Alumni and Corporate Relations gave an update of the major research and academic successes of IIT students and faculty; the awards won by both in internationally recognized contests and the how proud we all are of their achievements. IIT Bombay was the first choice for 49 of the top 50 new students!

Continuing its long tradition, GNY Chapter also published its 2016 GNYPoint magazine, which has some great articles mostly written by the GNYChapter members. At the event, Nivvedan S who recently was selected as the Volunteer of the Month for October 2016, was recognized with a plaque.
